Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

The book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? is by Mindy Kaling. Mindy Kaling is probably known to most as Kelly from The Office. Her book is about her troubles as she went through her younger years of life fighting to be accepted and chasing after her dreams. I think the purpose of this book is to show that if there is something you really want, you have to fight and actually work hard to get it.
In the begging of this book, Mindy Kaling talks about her love of comedy and acting and her dreams of being on one of those comedy central shows such as Conan. However, before she understood her love for acting and comedy, she hung out with a group of girls who she didnt have much in common with. They didn't get her sense of humor and the skits she showed them didn't entertain them. But Mindy Kaling had one friend, who shared the exact same sense of humor as her, and on the weekends, they would watch Monty Python and raid each others fridges. Mindy Kaling began spending more time with this other friend, and decided to just ditch her other friends all together. I think she included this part to show how sometimes you have to give somethings up in life to get where you really want to go. And that when you do, you might find that those things were holding you back.
This author also demonstrates how you really have to be motivated and be able to get things done on your own. An example of this is that Mindy Kaling used to be a little pudgy in her younger years, so she went on a self motivated sort of... cut back on her intake of food. Also, when she went off to college and gained the "freshman 35", she asked her friend if she would run with her every morning and that helped her lose that weight.
In conclusion, I think that Mindy Kaling is writing this book only to help people accomplish their goals. She's been really successful and this book is basically just saying how to stay on track and (I know this sounds totally cliche) follow your heart.

  1. I like how you stated your thesis clearly in the introduction. It was helpful that you gave some background throughout the post. This helped me understand the book. It was also nice how you were concise but included lots of text evidence. Great response!

  2. Something I liked about your reading response was how you started it. I think starting the response with what she was known for made the reader wonder what her book was about, and it was interesting to learn that through your response. Also not only what she went through, but what she is trying to teach through it.
